My new resident baby is nearly an inch long — about the size of a grape — and weighs just a fraction of an ounce. The essential body parts are accounted for, though they'll go through plenty of fine-tuning in the coming months. Other changes abound: Our baby's heart finishes dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form — as do the tiny teeth. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. Our baby's organs, muscles, and nerves are kicking into gear. The external sex organs are there but won't be distinguishable as male or female for another few weeks. The eyes are fully formed, but the eyelids are fused shut and won't open until 27 weeks. It has tiny earlobes, and the mouth, nose, and nostrils are more distinct. The placenta is developed enough now to take over most of the critical job of producing hormones. Now that our baby's basic physiology is in place, it's poised for rapid weight gain.
And speaking of hormones...I've had to be on progesterone again, just like I had to with Levi. And I will have my levels tested again next week to make sure they are where they should be to have a healthy pregnancy! I am also finally starting to get rid of my "Morning" sickness and feel somewhat normal again. Still exhausted, but not sick to my stomach any more...hooray!! So now it's grow time baby Geary!!
